Who are you really? elaboration on “yes and no”

“I was around when the Eiffel Tower exploded, I didn’t speak much French, rather like the majority of people there, and I became a suspect-”

“And were they right?” Arched eyebrow like The Doctor does so well.

“Yes and no…”

“Don’t speak in riddles”

She turned and smiled her peculiar smile “you know the funny thing is you’re not even scared, you’re intrigued

“Is that a bad thing?”

“not necessarily because it means that you won’t be satisfied with a half-truth, you’ll keep searching until you’ve got everything, but on the other hand it could get you killed…”

By now we were sitting on the grass in a park, it was a sunny day though not that warm. I waited for the rest.

“If you don’t run the moment someone says they’re a criminal, or they might be a criminal, and you try to dig too deep you could end up in some trouble…”

I sat up straighter and looked her in the eyes:

“Is there any chance of that happenning with you?”

“No, I’m not that bad and if I had any such secrets I wouldn’t tell you”

“Do you?”

“Well apart from my name, not really but even then I wouldn’t kill you just because you know my name”

“You are a master at avoiding tricky questions”

“And you have a good memory”

“Do you not?”

“If you keep jumping at all the bait I throw at you it’s not even fun anymore and you’ll never find out anything”

“Why yes and no?”

“Straight to the point I see…

Well you know how you can pay people to kill other people? I’m not like that but it’s a bit similar: instead of killing people I distract them, I infiltrate their homes, I get close to them, I steal, I put viruses on their computers, cameras in their homes, trackers and microphones in their shoes, watches, jackets, bags, bow ties, I swap things for others, I blow up their empty cars, for the blowing up of the Eiffel Tower I distracted the guards so that others could set the bomb that I had no part in making. I do many things but   I    do     not      kill.”

I don’t know why I believed her but it seemed impossible that she were lying, why tell me this much if just to end it with a lie? Would it not be easier to tell me that she was no-one? That she was just there? That she was just a normal person and had been forced to help? I was so confused…

“I don’t kill… I may help people to kill by doing these things but I never kill directly, I already feel dirty enough as it is…”

“why?”

“Why not? It’s a way of surviving like many others but one that’s more accessible for one of my age and education”

“Is this all a game to you?”

“No, it can never be treated as lightly as a game, and yet, I can’t bear to think of it any other way”

“Why?”

“Why do the earth and all the planets go around the sun? Why does there have to be good guys and bad guys? Because without bad guys there would be no good guys… I don’t only help terrorists you know…”

“Oh who else do you ‘help’ then?”

“British secret services, French secret services now but no-one ever knows or can know who I’ve worked for before. They all know they can never ask”

“How?”

“To protect myself and those I work for, I have contacts. I may even be asked to help set up a bomb somewhere and at the same time to give ‘the good guys’ information about that without either knowing I’m doing the other”

“You’re crazy”

“well you need a bit of everything to make a world…”

I will never figure this girl out…

“time’s up Smeagol” says she

“What?!” I started and got up when a boy in my class came up to me looking rather worried

“A qui tu parles?”

As my mind switched back to french I felt a chill in my spine as the voice behind me, so much colder than before, said it:

“well we’re in a funk now aren’t we precious…?”

Who are you really?

This is for the trifecta challenge, the word was funk. I managed to erase enough to do 333 words exactly: the story is based in France (which could be raising the question of why they were speaking English…?) enjoy 😇

“Hello”
“Hi, what’s up?”
“Not much my dear, not much… You?” She asks with that sly look of hers.
“I’m fine, I finished school now so-”
“Yes well I noticed that, you don’t often come out when you haven’t finished”
“Well, sometimes I just pretend…”
“Ooh you naughty girl!” Says she, falsely offended of course because she doesn’t even go to school.
“I was wondering, what’s your name? You haven’t told me yet”
“Ah that is the secret of Atlantis…”
“So you won’t tell me?”
“No but feel free to find me one”
“Do you not know your name? Or are you afraid of what I’ll find if I look you up…?”
“No I just don’t really like it… and I do get paranoid so the less people know my name the better”
“Another thing you haven’t told me is why you’re here”
“Well in my defence I did only meet you three days ago”
“That little huh? It feels like an age”
“Heh you’ve even started talking like me”
“You will answer me”
“Yes ma’m! ;p
I was around when the Eiffel Tower exploded, I didn’t speak much French, rather like the majority of people there, and I became a suspect-”
“And were they right?” Arched eyebrow like The Doctor does so well.
“Yes and no…”
“Don’t speak in riddles”
She turned and smiled her peculiar smile “you know the funny thing is you’re not even scared, you’re INTRIGUED”
“A qui tu parles?” Asks a boy in my class…
“Well we’re in a funk now aren’t we precious…”
